The Lake District

Almost 4 years to the day myself and Brian ventured 2 hours down the road to The Lake District for our 4th date! We stayed in Windermere and stopped by at Cartmel on the way home. Here we came across a 2 star Michelin restaurant called L'Enclume. We didn't eat there and I have wanted to go back ever since. As we haven’t been to many places during lockdown we decided now was a great time to have a change of scenery. The Lake District is always so beautiful in Autumn and even though it was a little chilly we loved the feeling of being all wrapped up stopping for warm coffee every now and then.

This time we went with my parents and Lilly and we started with lunch at L’Enclume. I’ve never eaten in a Michelin starred restaurant before so wasn’t sure what to expect, we chose the 8 course lunch taster menu at £65 per head. Each course was obviously small but this was about experiencing new flavours. In any case by the time we had finished the 8 courses, supplementary warm crusty bread and sweets at the end, it’s fair to say that we were stuffed!

The food was flavoursome and the service was impeccable. Each dish was served to everyone at the same time with a waiter per person, like a well practiced synchronised team. Once your course was placed a waiter then explained how the dish was created and the foods involved. All of their ingredients are grown and produced in Cartmel, which means they have the best quality seasonal produce. I can highly recommend the experience and I’m on a mission to try a 3 star next

After lunch we walked around the small village of Cartmel, in the various shops and pubs, around The Priory and Racecourse. When the horse meetings are on you can roam in and out of the village and course with your pass, which would be a nice way to experience the village.

From Cartmel we then drove 20 minutes up the road to Windermere (Parking is easy and it’s cheap) we then walked around part of the lake. We wanted to hire a boat as that's the perfect way to see the Lake in all its beauty, however last time we visited we did this and they didn't go very fast and because we had a 2 hour drive back home we decided to give it a miss this time.

There are so many scenic destinations within the Lake District and so much to explore. For us it can be a day trip destination being fairly close to where we live which is great.
